Society for Science has named Perryville High School science teacher Leanne Thele a member of its 2025-26 Advocate Program.

Mrs. Thele is a 29-year veteran science teacher, having spent the last four years at PHS. She is one of 70 teachers nationwide to be named Society for Science Advocates this year. The program is a year-long professional development initiative that supports teachers who are working to increase student participation in STEM research competitions. Advocates receive training from Society staff, mentorship from a Lead Advocate, and a $3,000 stipend to support their efforts.

"I'm honored to be selected as a Society for Science Advocate and excited for the opportunities this brings to my students,” Mrs. Thele said. “Coming from a rural and underrepresented area, my students often face limited access to STEM resources, but this program opens doors, empowers their potential, and helps them see themselves as future scientists and innovators. I can't wait to support them as they explore, discover, and shine."

Thele retired from Jackson R2 Schools after 25 years, but came to Perryville due to a critical teaching shortage. She teaches dual credit chemistry and freshman physical science as well as serving as the advisor for the Science Research Team at PHS.

"What I love most about science is its power to spark curiosity and discovery,” Thele said. “As a teacher, I get to witness that moment when students connect what they learn in class to the real world and that joy of discovery makes teaching incredibly rewarding."

Thele said her goals as a Society for Science Advocate are to increase the number of students participating in research projects this year and to encourage other District teachers to get involved in the Science Research Team to support it into the future.
